Making Memories

Even when conventional medicine can offer no more, a thoughtful deed can give patients something worth living for.

Friends of ANCHOR’s Making Memories fund is an initiative specifically for use by the family or clinical team of a patient who is receiving end of life care, to create a special experience for that person.

Following a successful application, the charity will fund and organise the memory, using carefully selected suppliers and vendors. We will take care of all organisational elements of the memory you would like to create, for a stress-free and special occasion for your loved one.

Applications are accepted for oncology and haematology patients residing in the North-east of Scotland. Memories can be arranged in the hospital setting for inpatients, or outwith for those who are able to be at home.

Hospital-based memories may include events such as a games night, pamper day, movie night or tea party. The fund can also be used to support birthday parties, weddings, blessings or other special occasions within the hospital setting.

Memories that could be supported outwith the hospital may be once-in-a-lifetime experiences including bucket list challenges or VIP hospitality at sports games, concerts or theatre shows. While Covid-19 restrictions remain in place, we remain committed to creating safe memories for patients, and these can be organised in the comfort of a patient’s own home or a private outdoor space.

Applications will be reviewed by a member of the patient’s clinical team before they can be approved. To request an application, please fill out the form below and our Wellbeing Team will be in touch with you soon. Alternatively, please phone 01224 859222 to speak to a member of the team.

What has the fund been used for in the past?

A mum’s wish for a special birthday party for her little girl. The party was organised within the ANCHOR Unit so that mum could be there too.

“It is safe to say the birthday party for Hannah was beyond anything I could have imagined when I asked for some help at the beginning of the week. The generosity and time given by members of the public to make a memorable day not only for Hannah but her mummy and daddy too, will hopefully stay with them for a long time. The look on Hannah's face was nothing but magical.”

A dad’s wish to be at his son’s wedding day. Special transport and nursing care was arranged so that the family could be together for the celebrations at a local venue.

“My dad Mel’s illness progressed to a terminal stage and his health was deteriorating very quickly but thanks to Friends of ANCHOR he made it to the wedding by private ambulance and gave a wonderful speech.
This meant the world to him and us as a family. It was the most special day which helped make his final 3 weeks of life happy, peaceful and filled with quality time together.”

An at-home Lapland experience for a family whose trip to the winter wonderland was cancelled due to dad’s health. Santa’s Grotto was set up in the family garden, with a snow-filled visit from St Nick and his elves, Christmas crafts and gifts, a big screen movie and a hot chocolate station.

“What you did for the family to create such magical Christmas memories and was nothing short of amazing. Thank-you!”
